The Moroccan cushions from by Bliss are made from various natural materials such as wool, cotton, and cactus silk.

These materials create a rich texture and fit perfectly in interiors where natural materials and soft, neutral tones take centre stage.

Frequently asked questions about Moroccan cushions

What are Moroccan cushions?

Moroccan cushions are handcrafted decorative cushions often made from natural materials such as wool, cotton or cactus silk. Many Moroccan decorative cushions are created from vintage Moroccan rugs that are carefully repurposed into unique cushions. Because of this, each piece has its own character and subtle variations in colour, pattern and texture may occur.

What types of Moroccan cushions are there?

There are many different types of Moroccan cushions, each with its own appearance and weaving tradition. Well known examples include Sabra silk cushions, kilim cushions, boujaad cushions, Beni Ouarain cushions, pom pom cushions and floor cushions.

Many of these cushions are made from vintage Moroccan rugs, sometimes referred to as Moroccan rug cushions. This means each piece is unique and carries an authentic character.

What is the difference between kilim, boujaad and Beni Ouarain cushions?

These Moroccan cushions originate from different traditional Moroccan rugs and each has its own distinctive character.

Kilim cushions are made from flat woven rugs, usually crafted from wool. They are known for their geometric patterns and earthy tones. Because kilim rugs are flat weave textiles without a thick pile, the cushions are generally thinner and lighter.

Boujaad cushions originate from the Boujaad region in Morocco and are often created from vintage Moroccan rugs. They are recognisable by their warm colours such as pink, terracotta and deep red. Boujaad rugs are woven from soft wool and often feature playful or abstract patterns.

Beni Ouarain cushions are inspired by the traditional rugs woven by the Beni Ouarain Berber tribes in the Atlas Mountains. These rugs are made from thick wool and are known for their soft texture, a cream or off white base and simple geometric lines in darker tones.

Are Moroccan cushions handmade?

Many Moroccan cushions are handcrafted by artisans who use traditional weaving techniques. In many cases vintage Moroccan rugs are repurposed to create unique cushions. Because of this, no two handmade Moroccan cushions are exactly the same and each piece has its own story and character.

How do you maintain and clean Moroccan cushions?

Moroccan cushions are often made from natural materials such as wool, cotton or cactus silk. As many cushions are created from vintage Moroccan rugs, it is important to clean them with care.

Small stains can sometimes be gently treated with a slightly damp cloth and a mild detergent. Avoid rubbing too firmly and allow the cushion to air dry naturally afterwards.

Because these cushions are often handcrafted and made from delicate materials, we recommend having Moroccan cushions professionally cleaned whenever possible. This helps preserve the quality, colours and structure of the fabric.

Sabra silk cushions (cactus silk) should not be cleaned with water, as the natural dyes may bleed when they come into contact with moisture. For these cushions, professional cleaning such as steam cleaning or dry cleaning is the safest option.
